Michael Fabricant met with staff and directors of Unitech in Burntwood
on Friday 22nd June to discuss issues affecting the company which is the
second largest manufacturer in the country of stainless steel and
aluminium equipment for use in the food processing and pharmaceutical
industries.

"The skills shortage in the West Midlands is really hitting Unitech"
says Michael Fabricant. "Too many people are taking degrees in media
studies then finding themselves unemployed while Unitech are now having
to bring in welders from Poland. I shall be raising this and other
matters with Government Ministers. Burntwood is also losing out because
grants are not available to purchase machinery – though they are
available in other towns. I shall be raising this with Advantage West
Midlands. This post code lottery is plainly unacceptable.

"But it is good news that Unitech is such a major player in the hygiene
industry. Current projects include the construction of a food
processing plant in California."
