Commenting on the Prime Minister’s announcement of the Prorogation of Parliament, Michael says:-

“If Parliament is prorogued on September 10^th returning on October 14^th for the State Opening of Parliament, it will be just 3 days longer than usual as there always is a Conference Recess in September for 3 weeks.  This does beg the question: what would Parliament have done in those ‘missing’ three days that it could not do in the last three years?  We have had the longest Parliament in 400 years so a State Opening is now long overdue.

“Vernon Bogdanor, the respected professor of constitutional studies at King’s College London, has said that hysterical talk of a ‘constitutional outrage’ is misplaced.  I agree.  Parliament voted to empower the British people in a Referendum and then voted with a majority of over 320 to trigger Brexit by applying Article 50.

“Since then, three times Parliament rejected the Deal;  the only motion Parliament did agree upon was that it would approve the Deal if the Irish back-stop clause were removed.  That is for the EU now to decide upon. Only they can amend the Deal.

“I believe that the democratic will of the British expressed in 2016, as empowered by Parliament, must now be enacted – with or without Theresa May’s amended Deal.  After three long years, the wait has been far too long.”
