Lichfield Trent Valley is one of the big winners in details of Virgin Trains’ summer timetable announced today. A number of additional stops will be added to Virgin Trains’ current service form 15 May, offering customers in Lichfield greater choice and speedier journey times.

With two additional trains to London on Sundays (9.25am and 7.35pm) and two returning at 9.14am and 5.08pm respectively, the much improved weekend service also sees one additional train in each direction on a Saturday.

The midweek service (Monday – Friday) is enhanced with an extra service to London at 9.01am, great for those wanting a leisurely day in the Capital and reached in just 1hr 18mins. The Fridays Only 18.46 train from London is replaced with an 18.40 departure each weekday.

It represents a big win for local stakeholders including the Lichfield Rail Promotion Group who have worked closely with Virgin Trains to affect these changes.

“Lichfield is one of the region’s success stories, both stations having seeing significant growth in passenger numbers in recent years,” explained Phil Cavender, Virgin Trains General Manager. “We’ve been listening and it is great to be finally in a position to reward those who have made such a compelling argument for additional stops at Lichfield.

These thoughts were echoed by the Lichfield Rail Promotion Group whose Chairman David Dixon added, “We are delighted that Virgin Trains is to increase the number of trains calling at Lichfield Trent Valley station by over 30% from the middle of May this year. Of particular significance are extra weekend calls, which make it far easier for Londoners to come here for the day, and for local residents to spend Sundays in London.”

The new timetable has also met with the approval of Lichfield MP, Michael Fabricant.

“These extra services throughout the week – including weekends – make good news for Lichfield commuters and enables London and the North to be even more accessible from our City,” he enthused.

“Combined with Network Rail’s commitment to provide lifts at Lichfield Trent Valley enabling easy access to all platforms and the re-opening of additional car parking, these new Virgin Train services will help the railway station become a major transport hub.”
