GOLD MUST BE SHOWN IN LICHFIELD
Michael Fabricant says the Saxon gold recently discovered in Hammerwich
"must be put on show in Lichfield or Hammerwich. While a permanent home
may be found in the British Museum for this unique treasure, it is only
right and fitting that local people should have the opportunity to see
it easily. Possible locations that immediately come to mind are St
Mary’s Heritage Centre in Lichfield or Lichfield Cathedral. Both
locations are easily accessible and have a claim to showing these early
Christian relics.
"I resist talk of putting it on show in Shugborough simply because the
County owns that site.
"I also hope that some – if not all – of these relics of Saxon life in
Mercia will find a permanent home in Lichfield District.
"Meanwhile, I say to Gordon Brown following his selling off cheap our
national gold reserves when he was Chancellor, that I hope he notes that
Hammerwich has done its best to restore them!"
