VOTE ON EURO REFERENDUM
"I am disappointed that the Speaker has not selected the amendment
tabled by Labour and other MPs for a vote at 10pm tonight (Monday 21st
January) which calls for a referendum on the latest European Treaty.
But that is his decision to make" says Michael Fabricant. "If the
amendment had been selected, I would have supported those Labour MPs.
Instead, I will vote against the complete ‘European Union (Amendment)
Bill. The Bill should not be considered until the Government honours
its election promise and holds a referendum first. I am interested to
know what people in the Lichfield constituency think about this".
William Hague, Shadow Foreign Secretary, says "In the absence of a
vote on a referendum this evening, Conservatives and many members of
other parties will vote for a referendum during later stages of the Bill
in the next few weeks.
"We will in any event be voting against 2nd Reading of the Bill, as it
has no democratic mandate from the British people."
