MICHAEL FABRICANT TO RECEIVE POLICE CITATION
Michael Fabricant will receive a police citation at Lichfield police
station at 3.15pm on Friday 5th May.
CITATION: During the early hours of Thursday 29 September 2005 a group
of friends met in Lichfield for a night out. One of the men became very
drunk and the group of friends left him to fend for himself. The man
found his way to Minster Pool and, on Minster Pool Walk, he climbed a
metal fence which separated the footpath from the pool and there he fell
into the water. Due to his drunken condition and the coldness of the
water he found himself in a very dangerous situation so began to shout
for help. His cries were heard by a pedestrian walking close by, a Mr
Jack Shelly, who then sought assistance from another passer by, Mr
Michael Fabricant. Between the two of them, they managed to pull the
man to safety.
Mr Shelley and Mr Fabricant raised assistance from the police and
remained with the man until their arrival. Mr Fabricant surrendered his
jacket to the man in order to keep him as warm as possible in the
situation.
For their public spirited actions the Divisional Commander, Keith Smy,
is proud to present the Divisional Commander’s certificate of
appreciation for the life saving actions of Mr Shelley and Mr Fabricant.
Michael Fabricant says "I am honoured to receive this award together
with Jack Shelley who had the calmness of mind to seek assistance in the
early hours of the morning. I am just pleased that I was around to
help. It shows that younger people are every bit as responsible at
times of crisis as anyone else. But most important of all, I am
relieved that we helped to save a life."
