Michael Fabricant says that new plans for higher education funding will be
of particular benefit to students living in under-funded midlands counties
such as Staffordshire and Leicestershire. "Staffordshire and other midlands
counties are strapped for cash as they receive less education funding per
pupil than most other areas. Staffordshire is near the bottom for funding.

"Plans just announced to abolish student tuition fees will make a huge
difference to students in my area" says Michael Fabricant. "Even though
part of the deal is that student loans will be at a slightly higher rate of
interest than at present, Conservative plans just announced will just about
halve student debt as far less money will need to be borrowed in the first
place. There will be no more borrowing for expensive tuition fees anymore
and means testing for loans will be scrapped. There will be grants for
poorer students.

"I do not agree with those who have criticised the plan because the
Government’s aim to have 50% of all youngsters attending universities has
been dropped. That plan makes a mockery of a university education where a
Bachelor’s degree is meant to be worth something. Around 42% of students
currently go on to study at university and this will be maintained provided
students meet the entrance standards.

"Universities like this scheme too as it will bring in a much needed £21
billion extra funding for our universities" adds Michael
