TOP-UP FEES
Michael Fabricant tonight (27th January 2004) voted AGAINST the Government’s
proposals to introduce university top-up fees.
Michael says: "Labour’s narrow victory is a defeat for poorer students who
wish to go to university. The Government’s concessions will mean nothing
for poorer middle class families such as the son or daughter of a postman.
Meanwhile all the evidence shows that students from poorer backgrounds will
be deterred from going to university. Britain needs university students
with ability, not just money. This result is hugely disappointing and is a
betrayal of parents, students and Labour voters in Staffordshire who thought
they could believe the Labour manifesto."
